Individuals who were born in, have lived in, or received blood transfusions in the following countries since January 1, 1977 are indefinitely deferred:
Donors must wait 3 months following travel to malaria risk areas as defined by the CDC. If a person was a resident in a malaria risk area, that donor must wait 3 years upon entering the US.
Most tropical resorts and many countries have NO travel exclusions, but please check the malaria risk status for each specific location visited.
Don't let a deferral prevent you from trying again. Sometimes, it is common (especially in female donors) to have lower iron levels. Iron levels vary from month-to-month, so please try to donate again. Here are some iron-rich foods that may help increase your iron levels.
